If you support Montessori education and want to become a teacher, it’s time to get certified to teach at a Montessori school near you or study for the certification to open up your own Montessori educational facility.
Montessori certification 2022 tuition costs about $2,000 or so, depending on the accredited online or in-person course you select. You will have to choose whether you want to work with children ages 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, or 9-12. Tuition is based on the age group in which you choose to teach as a Montessori educator.
The investment for your certification will benefit a lifetime of educational greatness for the children that you teach in your career.
What is Montessori Education?
Maria Tecla Artemisia Montessori was the woman behind today’s Montessori education. She was an Italian physician and her philosophy degree from the University of Rome helped her to adopt her self-named education theory. Even though she passed on before the educational basis of her craft was finalized, her child development and philosophy studies she learned while working with disabled children during her career helped to solidify what Montessori is today.
According to Montessori Northwest, the Montessori education theory and practice encourages children from birth all the way to adolescence to be assigned an activity in which they perform independently with a group of their peers.
The trained Montessori teacher has more of a “hands-off” approach and lets the students make the decisions necessary to finish the activity. Hence, the student is responsible for the success or failure of the self-guided activity.
Not all Montessori activities involve group work. There are also age appropriate educational activities for the individual student to complete on his or her own.
Classroom activities are also done in different areas of the room or even in different environments. They could be done at individual student desks, group tables, on the floor, or even outside. The children are in charge of their own social interactions and problem-solving for when an issue arises with a peer during play or a project.

- What types of toys are in a Montessori classroom?
For younger children ages birth to 3, Montessori toys include those made of cotton, wood, wool, or metal. These materials are usually softer and safer if a little one decides to put it in his or her mouth. These different textures in Montessori toys help children to learn more about their physical environments and refine their 5 senses.
- Even though a teacher has a more “hands-off” approach, when should he or she step in to help a student or a group of students?
Of course, a Montessori teacher should step in if students are having trouble problem-solving an issue on their own. Redirect the children to think critically about the issue, so that they can solve it themselves.
